Who makes stuff?

Postby freydis » Wed Jan 13, 2010 1:50 pm

So... as far as Art goes, who makes stuff?

Among many, many other things, i make jewelry.

Right now, I've been making pendants of old-fashioned clock winding keys.

I dont know if these photos will show up, but theyre cruddy cell phone pics of jewelry i made....

All of those are absolutely wonderful, I especially love the (what looks like, and I apologize in advance if I'm wrong) tea kettle in the last one.
Help spread the plague!

I liek them, out of interest, are some of them including the Bee Pins from the AP store? Either way they look good and seem like a pretty original idea.
I like morally grey, it goes with my eyes.

Does the routine destroy our creativity or do we lose creativity and fall into the routine?

No, the bee is actually a button. All the bits and pieces were picked up from a craft store, except for the clock winders.

I thought that bee pin reminded me of the ones sold by AP...Kristina's bee pins...

Absolutely beautiful! Do you sell any of your jewelry?

I too make jewelry (limited). I also make hand-made greeting cards. I should really post pictures...

Yes, post pictures! That's the point of the thread. :P

I am horrible at selling stuff. I love making stuff, however. I mostly end up making things as gifts for people. Once I get around to it, I'm actually going to send one to Kristina, methinks. :) I just have to hunt down an address to send it to. Unless of course someone has it and PMs it to me?

If anyone wanted to buy one, I'd certainly sell one. If you're interested, PM me with what youd be willing to spend, and if you have any thematic preferences. Every single one of these I've made so far has been one-of-a-kind.

I make a LOT of stuff... all kinds of jewelry, wood-burned jewelry boxes, wool ponytail falls, and the occasional scarf or blanket...

Actually, I think the one at the top with the vines and the cameo is the one going to Kristina... I've got a lot more up on my facebook page. The bottom one is the one im keeping for me, and the one with the heart is for a dear friend of mine... the one with the bee was made with Palimpsest in mind, so it's getting dropped in the mail for Kat Valente.

I make glass beads on occasion, mostly for friends and family.

I use a small hot head mapp gas torch, mandrels coated with bead release, and rods of moretti or effetre glass. I hope to get a propane/oxygen torch sometime, and a kiln to cool them instead of a fiber blanket. Glass turns into a cold honey consistency, thick, but runs eventually, when it melts, and can be worked with various kinds of tools. It's funny stuff...it hates temperature changes. Heat it up, and it expands. The amount it expands depends on the type. Heat it too fast, and it explodes, (It's called thermal shock, and one learns fast not to do it....little fragments of red hot glass hurt!) cool it too fast and it crackles...Hence the kiln fiber blanket to slow the cooling. I only work with those kinds of glass because they have the same expansion coefficient...different coefficients, and the bead explodes as it cools, spoiling all your careful work. That set of beads made to look like a cow was one of the most difficult things I've ever made. It kept cooling too fast, and too unevenly, and snapping the legs off...Sometimes explosively!
